The Cardiovascular Research Centre and Centre for Biomedical Engineering in the University of Adelaide have developed a novel application that is based on phase contrast magnetic resonance images to construct a velocity field in cardiac structures. The velocity field is used to track the movement of blood and tools such as streamline tracing and vorticity maps can be superimposed onto steady-state magnetic resonance images to enhance flow visualization. The newly invented cardiac flow analysis technique has been introduced for evaluating blood flow from MRI images of normal or pathological components of the blood circulation system. The constructed velocity fields that are obtained from the clinical phase contrast MRI scans sequences can be applied onto the flow analysis. The proposed system is based on intensity-based phase contrast MR images as the method for flow generation and assessment. To date, there have been no tools to quantitatively evaluate the blood flow and stresses in the chamber wall with reliable technical accuracy. This software package enables a good analysis of the cardiac flow, and has potential applications for identifying risks for stroke. The cardiac flow analysis system is created by Dr Kelvin Wong at the University of Adelaide. It was also supported by a research scientist, Dr Pawel Kuklik at the Cardiovascular Research Centre, Royal Adelaide Hospital. The presentation of this software at various conferences in the world has been appropriately received.
